Whatever our age, Serge Gainsbourg is part of our lives. We all have our own Gainsbourg period and our own favourite time in his career.
For me this exceptional artist is like a member of the family who we don’t often hear from, but who is with us throughout our life. I was stunned to realise that already 25 years had gone since he left us, and the idea then came into being to have this exhibition as a tribute.
After so many years of showing prints of Serge, it was time to do better and finally to honour him.
So the public can be delighted by the many previously unpublished images of Serge, alone or often accompanied by Jane Birkin, sometimes at the side of other beauties…
The common thread running through all these images is without doubt the beauty, caught by certain photographers, of this man who saw himself as ugly, and yet who charmed the most beautiful women in the world.
As is often the case at the Galerie this is an extremely subjective selection, but one which I hope will surprise the visitors and touch their hearts.
