Paris Photo 2011 : Michael Stevenson (South Africa)

Preview

Introduction
STEVENSON is a contemporary art gallery with premises in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and is jointly owned by its team of directors. The gallery opened as Michael Stevenson in Green Point, Cape Town, in 2003, and subsequently partnered with David Brodie in Johannesburg in the form of Brodie/Stevenson, which opened in 2008. That same year the Cape Town gallery moved into its current premises in Woodstock, and since November 2010 the Johannesburg gallery has occupied its Juta Street location in Braamfontein.
The gallery has hosted a series of solo and group exhibitions that engage with contemporary art practice in South Africa as well as Africa and its diaspora. In addition to giving (South) African artists access to the rest of the world, the gallery’s FOREX programme, started in 2009, has brought the work of international artists like Rineke Dijkstra, Thomas Hirschhorn, Glenn Ligon and Walid Raad to South Africa, often for the first time.
A cornerstone of Stevenson is its active publication programme that includes catalogues for many of its exhibitions and artists. Because of its location, art fairs are particularly important to Stevenson: it has recently participated in abc (Berlin), Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami Beach, Arco (Madrid), the Armory Show (New York) and Art Basel.

What is your point of view on the financial side of the photographic market today ?
Historically, the market for South African photography has primarily been the domain of European and American collectors. More recently, we have thankfully experienced a wave of interest in the medium from local collectors, too. Internationally, (South) African photography is gaining in prominence through curators like Okwui Enwezor, collectors like Artur Walther and events like Paris Photo. What fascinates us is how the photography world and the art world on the one hand operate almost entirely independently from one another, while on the other hand they are becoming ever more intertwined. Paris Photo is one arena where one can watch this process play itself out.
