Introduction
Established in 2003, the Galerija Fotografija gallery is the first private gallery in Slovenia dedicated just to fine art photography. Located in the first floor of the medieval house in the old Ljubljana city centre, the Galerija Fotografija aims at popularisation of high-quality photography of established Slovene and international artists. Alongside up to 8 exhibition annually the gallery organises also lectures, round tables and project presentations. The gallery entered the international art market in 2009, participating at the Viennafair, continuing in 2010 and 2011 at the Paris Photo and MIA fair.
The gallery also runs a book shop focused on photography literature.
What is your point of view on the financial side of the photographic market today ?
Our situation and position is a little bit special and different from the other markets in Europe for example in France, where photographic market has large and strong tradition.
We are first private gallery dedicated just to fine art photography in our contry.
The motivation behind the founding of Galerija Fotografija was to make fine art photography better known to the Slovenian public at large and to act as something of a forum for those active in the photographic circles. In addition, we have sought to create a market for fine art photography which until recently, has been largely non-existent.
Although photography art has large and strong tradition in Slovenia, we have to mention the early beginings in 19th century when Slovenian Janez Puhar invented the photography on glass (around 1839) and untill then photography in Slovenia have spread widly with prominent authors, but we didn’t have market for photography.
The Galerija Fotografija gallery is now in its 8th year and we notice a big difference from our beginings in 2004. We did start and manage to develop the market and we also notice that the interest for buying the fine art photography is growing. For us is also very important to participate on the art fairs and we are very satisfied and happy to be selected also in this year’s Paris Photo because this is the best way to show our work.
We are acting in two main ways, we bring foreign authors to Slovenia and promote Slovenian authors abroad.
