Introduction
Opened in September 2010, the Sultana gallery is located in the Marais, in the dynamic area of the Rue Saint-Claude and Arquebusiers, it offers a seven annual exhibitions. Strongly rooted in both the French and American scenes, with the presence of several artists living in New York and Miami, the gallery has chosen to promote artists whose vocabulary and forms of expression are unique, developing careers in constant ascent. Many institutions have been responsive to these, both in terms of exhibitions and acquisitions.
What is your point of view on the financial side of the photographic market today ?
I feel as though very interesting things are happening, but they are being made by photographers who have been in the circuit for a long time. Well established people, not emerging ones.
I think the programming of institutions is rather weak in young photographers.
We see photography, of course, but made by visual artists whose practice of photography is at the same level as sculpture, installation …
In art fairs or Biennials I do not really get to see young photographers.
This medium is quieter today than it was a few years ago, when a real passion could be felt.
I feel that young photographers have trouble finding galleries to exhibit their work at the end their studies.
Thereby a lack of visibility on the market and in institutions.
I am very curious to see if real young talent can be discovered at Paris Photo.
I only work with one photographer at the gallery, someone who is 65, who has a career and has built a very consistent body of work.
Walter Pfeiffer has had numerous exhibitions in museums and art centers and continues to work with the same energy that sometimes surprises young photographers in Zurich and elsewhere. It mixes very well with the contemporary art programming at the gallery and I find it very interesting to connect Walter’s world to that of young artists.
