The new year has just begun and it’s time to update that calendar on the wall. You can pick the post office calendar with the kittens on it, or the shirtless firemen one. Or maybe this year you can try Laurence Vecten’s third annual calendar showcasing Japanese photography.
Vecten, founder of the blog One Year Books and photo director of Glamour magazine, released the first calendar in 2012. Each season featured a different photographer, and proceeds from it went to the Japanese Red Cross and the victims of Fukushima.
For 2015, Vecten asked a dozen photographers to contribute. “I like to mix well- and lesser-known photographers,” she says. “I like the way it comes together.” Stars from the Japanese photo scene like Daido Moriyama appear alongside hip young photographers like Daifu Motoyuki. “Moriyama shows you colors you might never have seen before,” says Vecten. The months pass and the year comes to a natural close with a picture by Yuji Obata (Danziger Gallery) of a group of ice skaters.
Proceeds this year will go to the National Parents Network to Protect Children From Radiation.
