Carnival of Dunkirk – Matantes, Mononcles
In Dunkirk, the inhabitants are impatiently awaiting the Three Joys. For three days in a row, bands and balls follow one another. During these three days, the bands of Dunkirk, the Citadel and Rosendaël are frequented by thousands of people. The real carnival-goers will follow the balls and bands of the region until April.
Carnival is an opportunity to let off steam and let your imagination run wild.
This is why the carnival-goers compete in ingenuity for the making of their “clet’che”, in other words their disguise.
Many men disguise themselves as women and for this adopt wigs, fishnet skirts, jewelry, false eyelashes, make-up, flowered hats. Some even put on women’s underwear over their dress. Others choose the straw loincloth, the black undershirt and blacken their faces to look like “Zulu”.
