Nine Gallery presents the exhibition Sidewalk Stories – Japan by Christopher Rauschenberg. He writes :
I spent the month of October, 2023, traveling in Japan. I wandered around in Tokyo, Nikko, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Naoshima, Teshima, Kirishima, and Kamakura. These places spoke to me and here you have my responses.
The two strongest influences on my work have long been Eugene Atget and Lee Friedlander. The 13 (56 x 84cm) prints in the current Nine Gallery exhibition in Portland, Oregon, owe the heaviest debt to M. Atget. It has been over 25 years since I did my project of rephotographing Atget’s Paris (published as the book Paris Changing in 2007) but you can see that I am still in his sway.
