Carthage
La Goulette, Le Kram, Carthage, Sidi Bousaïd… are villages served by the 19 km long TGM (Tunis-Goulette-Marsa) railway line, inaugurated in 1905 and which connects Tunis to La Marsa.
During my stay in La Goulette, the train was not running and so I traveled mainly on foot to discover the remains of Carthage located mostly on the outskirts of this TGM line.
This ancient Punic city founded by Queen Dido in 840 BC. JC was annihilated by Rome a few centuries later so that Julius Caesar built a new city on its ruins; this shows the archaeological wealth of the region. But there is not much left, because after the Arab conquest around 700 AD the city was razed and the materials from its destruction were recycled and used for the construction of Tunis.
Circulating today in this region is a special experience because the different eras (classical, Arab, colonial and modern, etc.) coexist at the same time as its social realities assert themselves where poverty is never very far from the great and rich. white villas hidden from view of the street by high surrounding walls and which make Carthage the chic suburb of Tunis.
