Nathalie Dallies shot this photograph for PHPA at the Hôtel La Belle Juliette in November 2013. It appears here accompanied by an extract from Charles Baudelaire’s “Voyage,” as well as two of her personal series, Kopce and Maria.

“The journey is like the night. Sleep is a journey to which we surrender ourselves… We wait for the promise of a rebirth the next day, aspiring to happiness and self-realization, a fertile darkness… I decided that I would only shoot outside of the room. The basement of the La Belle Juliette offered me a moving space that oscillated between darkness and light… Water, an allegory for sleep, floating dreams… Immersing oneself in water the way we immerse ourselves in the night. Sleep, an escape allowed for by the departure of the soul, exhaustion, melancholy… The bath as a metaphor for rebirth and transformations.”
