Until January 5, 2025, the Musée Ziem in Martigues presents Zingaro, 40 ans d’histoires partagées.
It is from the complicity between photographers Alfons Alt, Antoine Poupel & Alain Sauvan and their connection with Martigues that an exhibition was born around Bartabas, Zingaro equestrian theater leader.
Alain Sauvan, Zingaro’s first photographer, was able to capture moments of work and daily life, family scenes between Bartabas, his wife, their baby and their falcon. Some spectacular stagings like the black stallion, who without taking a run-up, could jump above the seated artists – make the energy of the company palpable.
Antoine Poupel, Zingaro’s official photographer, has been Bartabas’s traveling companion since the early 1990s. He has photographed all of the troupe’s shows since Opéra équestre (1991) until 2015, providing a personal perspective through highly poetic image montages in order to better convey the madness and poetry of Zingaro and the immense complicity between man and horse.
Alfons Alt accompanied Bartabas’ troupe during their show Cabaret de l’exil in 2021. The meeting of these two universes plunges us into a dreamlike world populated by animals, nature and mythology. Alfons Alt walks on the boundaries of painting, photography and engraving through a process invented in the mid-19th century that he updated and named “Altotype”.
