During the winter of 2009-2010, Nicola Lo Calzo settled in Cameroun for 4 months where he took pictures of one of the country’s minorities, those suffering from dwarfism. He took pictures of them in their home environments and in the street. For the most part, his subjects posed proudly, looking directly at the camera like Fidel in the center of the picture, in uniform and sunglasses.
He called the series “Morgante”, the name of one of the five dwarves that sat on the 16th court of the Medicis in Florence. While looking at a panoramo of timeperiod paintings, Nicola Lo Calzo learned that the dwarf Morgante, “devoid of his individuality, became an idea, an archetype”. Several centuries later, with the series “Morgante”, he provides homage to these little people.
Nicola Lo Calzo was born in Florence (Italy). His pictures have received numerous awards, including the Magnum Expression Award in 2009 or the HSBC prize in 2010.
