Michaela Lahat, Simulacron

Preview
Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “World on a Wire” evolves around a simulation program, called “Simulacron”, that contains an artificial world with thousands of “identity units.” These units are uninformed human beings who are unaware that they are living in an artificial world.
Simulacron is symbolic of the idea of the representation of this artificial reality. These photographs of bedrooms in a hotel are about the tension between what is being represented to us and the emotional knowledge we bring to these places. Are they representations of places of intimacy where love is lost or a place to find comfort or possibly an escape from a routine, and can they live up to these promises?
Mario Perniola’s definition of a Simulacra is “the image of something that does not exist.” These photographs of hotel bedrooms are associated with intimacy and thus raise questions about the idealization of relationships. Can the intimate experiences we expect and wish to have be more than an idea?
