For 30 years, Michael Grecco has lived in Venice Beach, California. For 30 years, he has been photographing all the most amazing and absurd crowds populating the boardwalk that runs along the ocean . Last week, he exhibited his pictures; here they are. – Jean-Jacques Naudet
Michael Grecco’s Venice project started over 30 years ago. The Venice project demonstrates a variety of Michael’s work that has never been seen in its entirety and represents a blend of photojournalism and commercial portraiture that he is known for. It all began while he was in transition as a staff photographer working a the Boston Herald and moving to LA to work for People Magazine.
Michael’s experience in photojournalism allowed him to build a strong foundation in photography, especially with the exposure of working in a variety of uncontrolled shooting environments. After years of photojournalism experience, he began to develop a passion for portrait photography. He wanted to take his work and creativity to the next level within an environment where shooting elements were more controllable. This is ultimately what led him to take the leap from Boston to LA to start his journey as a celebrity portrait photographer.
The Venice project brings together two of Michael’s passions, which are photography and storytelling. Michael Grecco’s Venice project is truly a conceptual approach to storytelling, as opposed to the realist approach he learned at the Boston Herald. Everyone he has worked with comes with an interesting story written all over them; they have strong identities that convey a message that can’t always be put into words and can only be seen through the right moment captured.
Michael has taken the lighting and the drama that is his uniquely his style and brought it into the streets, mostly Venice, but also Santa Fe and Miami Beach. The most recent work has never been shown except on his website (
https://michaelgrecco.com), but now will be open to the public on display on October 4th at the Terrace Restaurant in Venice. Venice on Venice seems appropriate.
