1961 started with a contract with STERN magazine, Hamburg. Speaking some French, Italian, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish I was covering worldwide stories for STERN. Still I had freedom to plan my stories and to reject stories I was not able to fill. Nearly 90 % of my assignments have been published. So I was one of the 10 photo journalist reporters of STERN working fulltime. For about two years I concentrated on Russia and the communist countries, for some years I concentrated on Israel establishing a good network. I also concentrated on Brazil and West Africa having networks to produce stories in days or weeks, needed for a weekly magazine like STERN. In this times STERN had sometimes over 2 million copies a week and it was easy to get help as every politician or every company wanted to be published in STERN. So this was the beginning of a golden time when we were allowed to fly first class for every job with over six hours flying time.
