Memymom is a collaboration between two artists, a mother (Marilène Coolens -1953) and her daughter (Lisa De Boeck – 1985). Two self-taught photographers who work and live in Brussels, Belgium. Since 2004, Lisa and Marilène work as adults together under the moniker memymom. Their cooperation actually started with what they call The Umbilical Vein, when Lisa was still very young and Marilène encouraged her to express herself theatrically. This started an image archive containing half-staged dreamscape portraits that developed into a mature conversation that deals not only with metamorphosis and personal identity, but also emerging themes of sensual analysis and tragic romanticism. It reveals both the foundations of the close mother-daughter bond and the professional career of these two artists. Reinventing Appearance unveils a carefully made selection of images from The Digital Decade made between 2010 and 2015. These images introduce you to Memymom’s world in-between staging and documenting, where appearance is reinvented, made more strange and more exciting.
