Si vis pacem, para bellum (“If you want peace, prepare for war”).
“What is left of the Cold War? Martin Roemers gives a clear answer: the structural and topographic relics of the conflict. His photo series titled Relics of the Cold War comprises 73 analogue photographs taken in ten European countries. The photographs take us to abandoned army bases, underground tunnels, rotting tanks and destroyed monuments. Looking at these relics today you feel the echos of patriotism, paranoia and agression. They serve as a reminder of how things used to be, and how they could be once again: Two opponents building the same defence structures out of the same distrust and the same fears.
