Martin d’Orgeval’s photographs and the Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco

Preview

The Galerie du Passage in Paris is featuring a double event showcasing an exhibition of images by Martin d’Orgeval and a presentation of the 3rd Cahier of the Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco, an annual publication which, as the title indicates, emphasizes an encounter between photography and philosophy.

Charlotte Casiraghi, the president of the Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco, asked me to design the layouts for the third Cahier de Philosophie. The cover image came to me straight away: the desire for philosophical enlightenment manifested behind this door bathed in light makes you want to open it. A long while ago, I was struck by the mystery of this photograph by Martin d’Orgeval. Today, this mystery appears to me as a perfect opening onto philosophy.

My visit to the artist’s atelier was inspirational. By going through the body of his remarkable work, we decided to visually pair the different texts in this new Cahier in an informal and singular way. By way of responding to certain texts, Martin d’Orgeval, whose work is often seen as emanating from philosophical reflection, added new photographs — details of sculptures from the Musée du Louvre. To my mind, the relevance of this third publication (and the exhibition) corresponds to the Rencontres Philosophiques’ demand for quality and novelty.
