Mark Lewis – Above and Below is the first catalog published entirely by Le BAL, to coincide with the exhibition of the same name. This wonderful book brings the videos to life on the page, without making any sacrifices in the reproduction of the images.
We have to pay tribute the beautiful and sober work of designer Agnès Dahan. The films “open” on a black background listing only the title and date, then the following pages are filled with image after image, like a flipbook. This format bring the fluidity of the videos to the book, showcasing Lewis’s sense of composition and movement. The book is introduced by a text by the artist about movie extras, the same text he reads in The Pitch, a manifesto which reveals his curiosity about people, the harmless gestures of everyday life, and the backgrounds of the contemporary world. Chantal Pontbriand, who curated the exhibition with Le BAL director Diane Dufour, wrote the conclusion, published here in both French and English. The text contextualizes and deciphers Lewis’s work by exploring the idea found within it—modernity, time, movement, the city, formal invention—while detailing each video.
