“I was renting a large, dusty and dilapidated house above Honfleur […] when I discovered two concomitant facts: the sea was at the end of the earth, but, on the other hand, the Casino of Deauville was still open. »- Excerpt from With my best memory, Françoise Sagan
In 1960, some time after the publication of Bonjour Tristesse, Françoise Sagan dropped her bags on the Normandy coast. She rented the Manoir du Breuil from July 8 to August 8 located a few kilometers from Deauville, in the company of two friends. On the evening of August 7th they went to the Casino of Deauville. At dawn, after playing the 8th all night, Françoise Sagan comes out rich with 80,000 francs. When they came back to the mansion it was 8 am, they had to make the inventory with the owner. Tired, she asks if, by chance, the house would not be for sale. He answered yes, 80,000 francs. She took the winnings out of her bag and handed them over to the slightly flabbergasted man. This is how she acquired the manor that she kept all her life.
The series “8” by Marguerite Bornhauser echoes this story. A free interpretation, a visual rehabilitation mixing the Casino and the games, Deauville and its luxury hotels, its passing inhabitants, its nightlife and the number 8.
