“Leiter is a rare artist, one whose vision is so encompassing, so refined, so in touch with a certain lyrical undertone, that his best photographs occasionally seem literally to transcend the medium.” – Jane Livingston, The New York School , p. 322
American photographer Saul Leiter was a pioneer of color street photography. Born in Pittsburgh in 1923, this mysterious and fascinating artist passed away in November 2013. MAP Toulouse presents the first retrospective of his work , including some images that have never before been seen.
The exhibition is composed entirely of prints from New York’s Howard Greenberg gallery. The festival team balanced iconic images with lesser-known ones in order demonstrate the extent of Leiter’s photographic vocabulary.
