From October 21, 2022 and for 2 and a half months, the Maison de l’Amérique Latine invites you on a sensitive journey to Latin America through the eyes and photographs of Gisèle Freund. Under the title « Ce Sud si lointain » (This faraway south ) the exhibition highlights a photographic heritage of 72 images, some of which have never been seen before, divided between portraits of cultural personalities, landscapes, scenes of villages and markets, produced mainly between 1941 and 1954. The exhibition “Ce Sud si loin” aims to reveal the important place occupied by the vast American continent in the trajectory of the German-French photographer, renowned for her portraits of 20th century writers who have become iconic images, characterized by tight framing and the use of color starting in 1938. The images selected here highlight Gisèle Freund’s constant ability to focus not only on a person’s expression and their face, – “I have never stopped wanting to understand what is behind a face” – but also “the human being and what surrounds him”, his environment and his condition.
