Magali Lambert, the taxidermy of possible worlds

Preview

Between September 16, 2017 and June 17, 2018, the visual artist Magali Lambert is exhibiting her photographs at the Château de Dourdan in the outskirts of Paris. The featured images portray encounters between stuffed birds and works from the permanent collections of the Castle Museum. Presented as an enigma, the exhibition occupies two sites: the Château Museum and the Laboratoire Culturel (a new itinerant venue for contemporary art in Dourdan, present in the Château courtyard every weekend throughout the duration of the exhibition Oiseaux Disparus).

Among the collection of stuffed birds (which has been hidden from public view for several years), the focus is on extinct species. Staged and photographed in situ, the taxidermy disappears and the animals blend in with the museum décor. The permanent collection and the photographs are exhibited as if in a scavenger hunt.

Beyond the entertainment aspect of the exhibition, the images combine several fundamental themes that are close to the artist’s heart: still life, representation of absence, two- and three-dimensionality, the coexistence of the living and the dead following the tradition of vanitas.
