In photographing the daily lives of the women of Istanbul, I tried to create a portrait of the present in this fascinating “world city”, a mosaic of nationalities and cultures, the only geographic meeting point between the East and West.
The ascendency of radical Islam, where the women are in the front row seats, intensifies the confrontation between two antagonists: “Islam and modernity”, it is part of everyday life, sometimes in social and cultural mix, that only this city can engender, sometimes in a very harsh confrontation, backed up by Islamo-conservative power. The current events confirm this.
The women are the witnesses of this every day, because of their positioning, sometimes poles apart in their social and private lives. They are the soul of this city.
