Louis Heilbronn – Orchard continued

Preview

Louis Heilbronn presents his third solo exhibition at the Polaris gallery in Paris from March 9 to April 6, 2019.

Orchard Continued can be viewed as the album of a journey made in solitude in the American West by Louis Heilbronn, an almost inventory of the American countryside, but without giving us the opportunity to identify specific places, taking us, through an elliptical yet critical narrative, in an anachronistic and indefinite space time.

A singular beauty emerges from this journey, most often coming from the strange contrast between the simplicity of the places, people or objects photographed and the subtle light that emanates from their environment.

Observer of his own social space, Louis Heilbronn captures “moments” of this environment, of which he shows us most often excerpts, pieces of life, macroscopies of an everyday life. Here are mixed with great mastery the pictorial, literary and cinematographic references that have shaped the imagination of the great American West.

With so perfect an image in his light, Louis Heilbronn photographs like a novelist, and summons in this series reflections that can be read in the late nineteenth-century American transcendentalists who claimed to reconcile man and nature. The viewer is offered the beauty of the world and the natural tranquility of moments and silent spaces, making us see and feel the world as it was on the first day.

The strength of Louis Heilbronn’s eye is to make us question what he shows us: these are not mere vernacular landscapes but social and political landscapes, which question both our relationship to photography as a representation of the world, but also the future of a nation. It is this gift and taste of observation that makes Louis Heilbronn say that photography is his natural language.

With the series Orchard continued  the artist shares with us his need to continue to observe the world. If the artist proposes the scenes to decipher, it is the accumulation of images that holds the viewer that will lead the latter to go thru the work, and have access to the simple art of this eye.
