Le Temps des cerises (The cherry season)
We are a couple of artists, husband and wife, who have created a cycle of visual works dedicated to the Paris Commune of 1871. It is a project that we have been working on for three years. A collection of works that we have created together, inspired by common themes and visions. On this occasion, we are enclosing a selection of the works.
In summary, our cycle of works “Le Temps des cerises” was created with the desire to relive, internalize, and artistically tell the story of one of the most important popular uprisings that also left its mark on the following century: the Paris Commune of 1871. The works deal with a great variety of themes: men and women who took part in the revolt, places, struggles, and stories that characterized that spring up to the cherry season and the repression. The role played by photography in documenting and narrating this epic was explored: the first photographed revolution, the use of photos for the recognition of the insurgents, the use of staging and photomontage, and the fabrication of an anti-Communard iconography.
The works that make up our artistic/historical work are mixed media, created starting from reproductions of original historical images of the time and elaborated with a photographic encaustic process. They can be supported by separate notes that tell the story, characters, and themes investigated in the work itself. The work can be exhibited in different ways depending on the exhibition space. Each work constitutes a story in itself, but when exhibited in a group, it strongly evokes the events of that period. Our historical artistic work on the Paris Commune of 1871 aims to offer the opportunity to relive that period, revisit its aspects, and meditate on issues that are still relevant today.
