Pauline Caplet, founder of L’Enfant Sauvage, is joining forces with the Musée de la photographie in Charleroi and the Conserverie, an archive site, for this exhibition dedicated to so-called “sentimental” archive photography.
Starting from one of the chapters of the exhibition En dilettante History and short stories of amateur photography presented during the summer of 2022 at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi and produced with the complicity of La Conserverie and the collection of Michel F. David – Les Éditions Sur la Banquise, this exhibition, enriched with new images, will put the spotlight on sentimental photography. The latter refers to those amateur photographs which physically retain traces of a certain attachment, attention or neglect with which they were loved (or unloved), treated and considered. It is about these images which still populate many envelopes or shoe boxes today, these photographs which have long been slipped into a wallet, some so worn out from having been handled and touched so much, those which have been torn or cut out and sometimes (clumsily) reassembled, those cut out to erase this unwanted or no longer desired person. And then, all those who have collected captions on the back or on the image, to identify, to (re)member. These legends which are sometimes meant to be funny, touching, lyrical or more sarcastic to the point of sometimes taking precedence over the photography.
