Le Carré d’Art presents Mouna Saboni’s exhibition entitled Disappearance, a project carried out along route 65 in Jordan, the central point of the “Diagonal of Thirst” which extends from Tangier to China. A project on the disappearance of water, a major crisis of our century that the world will have to confront. Cradle of humanity, marked by History and the great monotheistic religions, a territory which has kept traces of the passage of humans for millennia.
A work carried out along the mythical Jordan River, reduced to a polluted river that can be crossed in a few strides. Along the Dead Sea which, inexorably, disappears, causing the ground around it to collapse. A territory where it is said that if nothing is done, there will be no more water in ten years. In the heart of a region under permanent tension but where border countries will have to agree if they want to survive.
Disappearance, like a large theater scene, brings together characters from mythology and men who seem swallowed up by their environment. They live in increasingly desert landscapes or on the ruins of civilizations that have now disappeared following climatic events. A project that projects us into an apocalyptic universe, where we no longer know if it is located in the past, the present or the near future.
With this new project, Mouna Saboni make notches on some of her images, as in the past we engraved stones. She inscribes texts found through archaeological excavations, written in alphabets that have now disappeared, and which bear witness to the traces of past civilizations. Like voices that seem to emanate from the ground to remind us of history and of the fragility of humans.
