In 2010, PMU (Paris Mutuel Urbain) established a photography grant, Carte Blanche, worth 20,000 euros. Malik Nejmi was the first recipient, followed by Mohamed Bourouissa, Olivier Cablat and, most recently, Kourtney Roy in 2013, with her series of self-portraits taken in the world of gambling.
This series by the young Canadian photographer will be on display at Le BAL through May 11th, 2014. The exhibition, Ils pensent déjà que je suis folle (They Already Think I’m Crazy) opened last week. Imbued with a 1950s aesthetic, Roy’s photographs mix absurdity and off-beat humor. With her self-portraits, the photographs immerses the viewer in the world of horseracing like we’ve never imagined it, where the objects, plants, armrests and binoculars take on a remarkable power, dominating the scene. They’re menacing, invasive, too sparkling or understated. This work is also the subject of a book published by Filigranes (80pp, 25€).
Submissions for this year’s Carte Blanche will be open through June. If you want to follow in Kourtney’s footsteps, don’t wait!
