Le BAL – Delpire & co : FROM HER Artists and their mother

Preview

It is an exhibition at LE BAL and a book published by Delpire & co.
The title: À PARTIR D’ELLE Des artistes et leur mere ( À PARTIR D’ELLE  Artists and their mother).

What do the works that make up this book have in common? Having been conceived in a tête-à-tête between artists and their mothers. Going beyond the pure testimony of an inevitably singular intimate relationship, the selected works are constructed from devices involving the body, the figure or the character of the mother in the creative process. This face-to-face encounter can be part of a collaboration, whether agreed, passive or imposed, such as the photographic series by Latoya Ruby Frazier or Gao Shan and the videos by Anri Sala or Ragnar Kjartansson. The presence of the mother can also be summoned via arts processes as in the works of Chantal Ackerman, Lebohang Kganye and Ishiuchi Miyako. Whether they seek to embody the reality of presence or the effects of absence, all have in common that they consider filiation as a way of rethinking relational models, between social criticism, self-quest, conjuring or appeasement. Here, the mother becomes a mirror. The selected works are accompanied by texts from the artists evoking the singularity and the issues, explicit or implicit, of these works. The radical and refined model creates a strong link between texts and images; the reader navigates from one artist to another through this universal theme.
