Kominek Gallery in Berlin shows the exhibition Tenha Orgulho by Kamila K Stanley. She thus presents the exhibition.
Today, Brazil is the most dangerous country on earth for an LGBTQIA+ person; half of the world’s homophobic murders are committed there. . In 2018, the country I know began to change. The specter of fascism resurfaced in the person of Jair Bolsonaro and his far-right agenda. In just a few months, homophobic attacks increased by 30% in the country; figure which climbed exponentially throughout his presidency. I then started the Tenha Orgulho series; which translates to “Be Proud”. Starting from an intimate circle, the project grew. For four years, I traveled across Brazil to create portraits of LGBTQIA+ people. I wanted to distance myself from stereotypes about queer Latin culture: hypersexualized bodies, or the fetishized precariousness of prostitution and drug addiction. Each portrait aims to reflect an image of which the person represented is proud. I ask everyone where and how they would like to be represented; which took me from the favelas overlooking Rio to the chic neighborhoods of São Paulo. The portraits are interspersed with appearances of the rich Brazilian fauna, offering a parallel reading between the violence exercised by humans on LGBTQIA+ populations, and that carried out on living things (deforestation of the Amazon, destruction of biodiversity).
