Kleinschmidt Fine Photographs is presenting a collective exhibition with the title “On the Sublime” bringing together the exceptional works of three artists from the gallery : Hugo Schmölz & Karl Hugo Schmölz, Michael Schnabel and Claus Stolz.
From their beginnings in the 1920s and for two generations, the studios of Hugo Schmölz (1879-1938) and Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917-1986) have played an important role in the photography of German architecture and have influenced the greatest contemporary photographers. Fifteen vintage prints of rare quality are assembled here.
Michael Schnabel (b.1966) makes large format, pigment ink prints. Works from three recent series – “Museen” (Museums) 2007, “Wasser” (Water) 2005, “Stille Berge” (Silent Mountains) 2003 are on show.
From the end of the 1990s, Claus Stolz (b.1963) has worked at fixing the sun’s rays by long exposures of varying lengths onto different silver-based films. A selection of these surprising heliographs entitled “Sunburns” can be seen in the exhibition.
