The story of these photographs begins in 2007. As part of a report I was preparing on anaesthesia, I was invited to witness a cesarean birth. I found the moment as beautiful as it was complex, with the expectant couple on the other hand and, on the other, the medical team in the operating room, tense but focused, the stakes of their every movement palpable. The complexity of this extraordinary operation left its mark on all of those involved.
