A Life Long Pursuit The U.S./Mexican Border
From the age of three years old, growing up in Calexico, California in a house just literally across the street from the U.S./Mexican border, I have always had a cameraaround my neck. My passion for photography began early, capturing family moments and documenting the border – a subject that has remained a lifelong focus.
Whether in Calexico, Texas, Arizona or San Ysidro, the border always feels like home.
For 25 years, I worked as a contract photographer for TIME magazine, during whichtime my weork has gained significant recognition. Twelve of my images are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and I have additional pieces in the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, California and also at Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego. I have had numerous solo exhibitions on the border including at the Imperial Valley Desert Museum. I have also participated in a group traveling exhibition for the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington DC.
Influenced early by painter Norman Rockwell and later studied Master Photographers under the guidance of Beaumont Newhall at the University of New
Mexico, College of Fine Arts. My documentary work on the border is deeply personal. My first picture book Life Along the Border sold out it’s first printing in just 30 days. My latest book, The Observant Eye, is available now at the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles and through my website.
