In the exhibition to open at the Palau Robert in Barcelona on March 1, the art director, producer and photographer Jaume de Laiguana selected 158 large-format photographs taken over the last 15 years to illustrate his professional career, works all infused with his personal vision of art and social engagement.
The photographs and accompanying videos illustrating de Laiguana’s approach to his work, reveal the talent, highly personal gaze and methods employed by this photographer who believes, not in perfection, but in the beauty of the imperfect.
The exhibition provides a broad retrospective in which Jaume de Laiguana presents his photographic works and the processes he uses to prepare and produce them, giving the spectator insight into his day-to-day procedures. Moreover, this show marks a turning-point in his trajectory as a photographer, as he begins to distance himself from advertising to focus on more artistic and personal photography, taking his first steps into the world of art.
Although much of Jaume de Laiguana’s work has its origins in advertising, it nevertheless has a life of its own. This is because one of this artist’s great strengths is the ability to turn commissioned pieces into authorial works by bringing his own, personal gaze to bear. De Laiguana’s work also includes other projects that focus on social problems, whose main goal is to make the spectator think.
The virtues of defects. The constant search for beauty in imperfection, accident or chance. Provocation. Non-conformity. Ceaseless work and learning. These are amongst the ingredients that characterise Jaume de Laiguana’s work, infusing it with an unmistakable, attractive and highly personal quality.
In the mid-1990s, Jaume de Laiguana (Barcelona 1966) left behind his years as an art director to launch a career as a photographer, working on major advertising campaigns. He began producing commercials and music videos, quickly gaining considerable national and international recognition. Over the course of his career, he has received countless accolades, including prestigious prizes for advertising and photography and several nominations for Latin MTV and Grammy awards. Moreover, his multi-disciplinary spirit has also led him to produce and direct stage shows for the world tours of major stars from the music world and to produce several documentaries.
Jaume de Laiguana has also published a number of books of photographs, all marked, not only by his personal aesthetic vision, but also by protest against social conditions. The proceeds from these publications have gone to different causes, from the fight against Aids to environmental conservation and grants for new photographers.
