What does it mean to call something “intimate?” Some of Petersen’s photographs could be seen as “stolen,” the result of an intrusion. But they’re nothing of the sort. His approach is based on the encounter with another person, listening to their stories, and the friendship that may result from it. The models at the Café Lehmitz are as conscious as possible of his presence. “Even if you ask people and they agree, it still takes time to get to know them, to get them to pose, and suddenly you’re collaborating with them.”
