Eight emerging photographers were selected by ten distinguished judges for the Hearst 2011 8×10 Photography Biennial. The renowned panel of judges included photographers Lillian Bassman, Simen Johan and Oberto Gili; creative genius Jean-Paul Goude; International Center of Photography Director, Willis “Buzz” Hartshorn; Co-founder of the fashion and art magazine “Visionaire”, Stephen Gan; Photography Gallery owners Bonni Benrubi and Howard Greenberg; Michael Clinton, President, Marketing Publishing Director, Hearst Magazines; and Town & Country Magazine’s Creative Director, Mary Shanahan.
The winners (presented in the portfolio here): Devin Tepleski, Jonathan Smith, Victor Yuliev, Christoph Engel, Nicholas Mendise, Rena Effendi, Gareth Kingdon and Thomas Stanworth.
The eight winners and ten honorable mentions were selected from over 4,600 entries from across the U.S. and 70 other countries, five times the number of entries than their inaugural competition in 2009. The work of these emerging photographers is installed in an exhibition in the atrium of Lord Norman Foster’s Hearst Tower, the company’s acclaimed New York City headquarters. The Tower’s Alexey Brodovitch Gallery* and Hearst Gallery features the exhibition of 100 photographs, curated by Photography collector, writer and lecturer John Bennette, who also oversaw the inaugural 8X10 show. Guests for the opening night of the exhibition included New Yorker Magazine’s Elisabeth Biondi, PHOTOGRAPHY publisher Bill Mindlin, Art Collector Alvin Hall, photographer Sylvia Plachy, curator Nessia Pope with artist Bastienne Schmidt, and Scherri Roberts, VP of Human Resources for Hearst Magazine, among many others.

From the earliest days of its magazine and newspaper publishing, Hearst Corporation has worked with legendary photographers, including Slim Aarons, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Philippe Halsman, Martin Munkacsi and today’s contemporary masters. The 8×10 competition was created by Gilbert C. Maurer, a member of the Corporation’s Board of Directors, Director of The Hearst Foundations, as well as a trustee under the will of William Randolph Hearst, and Debra Shriver, VP and CCO, SVP/Magazines for the Hearst Corporation.
