Head On Photo Festival : The Australians – My Pick
Rather unexpected – Torsten Blackwood
Sydney photojournalist and travel photographer Torsten Blackwood describes himself as “insatiably curious” and it is this desire to learn about cultures other than his own that has seen him travel the world, visiting more than 120 countries on six continents.
Blackwood originally studied architecture before turning to photography. After a decade of travelling the world and honing his photographic skills, he returned to Australia where for 20 years he worked as the Chief Photographer for Agence France-Presse covering Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and the Pacific Islands. He’s exhibited widely including at Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, France and also in Brazil, the US and in his homeland.
His Head On exhibition ‘rather unexpected’ is a “photographic celebration of the incongruous and the unexpected events that unfold before our eyes”. Blackwood’s images are at once humorous, absurd, and irreverent capturing the oddities encountered when you step outside your front door
