Five photography devotees from Belgium and France have founded a brand new review dedicated to analogic and alternative photography processes, which they chose to reveal at the Voies Off festival in Arles this year. It was received with great interest by photography professionals and circulation figures for the first issue already look promising.
The review’s tone is uninhibited, the graphics highly polished and the printing of superior quality. When the legitimate question as to the existence of a new review is raised, Halogénure’s editorial committee has a list of answers. Firstly, the aim is to raise the profile of all kinds of analogue photography – black and white or colour, instant or preindustrial, basic or ultra-sophisticated – by compiling the best images they can find – and they seek them everywhere! Then there is the undisputed editorial bias and a desire to give photographers a voice through encounters and ‘live’ interviews. The publication aims is to make its pages a kind of meeting place, establishing a dialogue between visions that would not otherwise come together within the same space, whether those visions are artistic, geographic, temporal, social or cultural. And ultimately, through encounters and exhibitions, its role is to promote analogue and alternative photography processes.
The first issue is split into three sections covering the work of seven photographers: Gilles Roudière, Gabrielle Duplantier, Stéphane Charpentier, Frédéric Buchet, Simon Vansteenwinckel, Thomas Fabiani and Superficielle from the Soon collective.
Every kind of art needs some form of income to exist. It is therefore crucial that we support – as far as our means will allow and in every way possible – the works and artists that we appreciate. The first issue of Hallogénure has been published thanks to a pre-order campaign which actually achieved twice the initial target. The editorial committee is now working on issue 2 to be published in early 2017. The goal is to release two issues a year.
