The photographic series Backgrounds focuses on photographers’ studios in the moment when the shooting process is not taking place. Here, the object of observation is the environment of the photographic process (more precisely, the background space of a photo studio), which legitimizes the exclusive nature of the photographed object, the value of a photograph, or even the status of a photographer. “Emancipated” from its direct purpose, the photographic background becomes an unfathomable space, yet at the same time is saturated with meanings that endow it with the status of an important and meaning-producing zone in itself.
