Strand Life…
STRAND: “The land bordering a sea, lake or river; in a more restrictive sense; that part of a shore which lies between the tidemarks.” Oxford English Dictionary
The strands of time flow through eons without a trace. Time, tides, and storms sweep away beaches, adjacent lands and human artifacts. Footprints are gone before their creators are.
But humanity does not stop.
We have followed the flow of rivers and streams that led us to oceans and seas: On and on across all bodies of water, the flow of humanity followed. Continent to continent and around the globe, generation after generation have found strands to be a vital part of lives.
Travel now is often to a favorite strand, a new one to discover, or a series of land, sand, and water to renew our lives. We continue to follow the waters of the earth around the globe to find our own strands, each a relief from a world of stress. Why?
The answer comes not from poet nor pioneer, but from a marine biologist, a scientist who was all three: Wallace J. Nichols.
Nichols explained and enshrined the need for the presence of water in our lives, summing up his work as “The surprising science that shows how being near, in, on, or under water can make you happier, healthier, more connected and better at what you do.”
Blue Mind is the landmark best-selling book by Wallace J. Nichols on the remarkable effects of water in all its shapes and forms that it has on our health and well-being. Not just a book, it has become The Blue Mind Movement to unite humanity to preserve, protect, and defend the health-giving ecology amid the enjoyment of water.
He defined the renewal of water as “when we physically enter the water, our body can rest muscles used every day, and work others that are used far less frequently. Not only that, but we give up gravity, something that’s somatically a break for your brain. For some, time spent in the water is an opportunity for insightful thinking, creative output, and quality conversations.”
Regrettably, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols will no longer lead the Blue Movement: He died too early, age 56, this past June.
Blue Mind, his remarkable book, will be re-issued on the tenth anniversary of its publication this December, comemorating the man, the movement and his genius.
This portfolio is dedicated to his memory, his movement, his humanity.
