35 years ago, I first met Athens, Greece…
If a relationship with a city endures the test of time, it becomes as complex as any long-term human relationship, arguably more so. There is an arc of familiarity that, with time, becomes comfortable, caring, forgiving.
My first interactions with Athens began on a glidepath over the Acropolis, into a tiny airport for a capitol city, passing machine-gun-bearing security guards and onto the top of a double-decker bus, front-most seat. It was a first impression that has lasted over 3 decades and 14 returns.
I have no doubts: Freedom originated in Athens. This remarkable city stands as testament and guardian of it.
Athens Mon Amie is an homage to the city, a small look at its individuality, and a deep appreciation of what it has meant to me.
