As part of the PhotoSaintGermain festival, the Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to present the work of Gianni Berengo Gardin, a key figure of contemporary Italian photography. Born in 1930, an indefatigable witness of the second half of the 20th century, Gianni Berengo Gardin traveled throughout Italy and collected many stories and images of the big and small changes that went through. The exhibition organized at the Hôtel de Galliffet presents a selection of sixty black and white photos from the impressive archives of the photographer. Taken between 1957 and 2009, they form an amazing photographic atlas that captures the wealth of popular festivals, costumes and Italian regional traditions. With the help of his lens, Berengo Gardin reveals a world teeming with children, gypsies, young and old women in festive clothes, dancers of all ages, on whom he takes a look as both an ethnographer and a benevolent curious. In collaboration with Contrasto, Pistoia – Dialoghi sull’uomo and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia.
