Gentilly : Amazement

Preview

The Maison de la Photographie Robert Doisneau has been running its ‘Photography at School’ educational programme since 2001. It is part of the curriculum in schools in the Val de Bièvre area, targeting 10 and 11-year-old schoolchildren as well as adolescents at the Fondation Vallée children’s hospital in Gentilly. The thinking behind ‘Photography at School’ is that while the process of photography can be learned, there is also a whole language to be acquired. The programme therefore combines photography practice with the interpretation of images.

The theme for this, the programme’s 15th year, is ‘Amazement’, to ‘focus on children, their imagination and capacity for wonder,’ explain Rafeal Serrano and Gilbert Gïza Rojas, two photographers involved in the programme. More than anything, amazement suggests a certain attitude or perspective. The programme takes an active, fun approach, the learning process encouraging the continuous observation of the world around us. It is all about amazing people with the everyday, ‘going back to basics – observing, watching, recording, taking a frame then stepping out of it or retaking possession of it to amaze ourselves’.
