Gaspésie 2014: Rencontres

Preview

Through mid-September, those who set out to discover the Gaspé Peninsula and its magnificent landscapes will be able to visit twenty exhibitions spread out across its 800-kilometer area. At galleries and outdoor installations, thirty photographers are presenting their project on this year’s theme, “Visible-Invisible.” Visitors will enjoy a varied and interactive program that is part of the natural configuration of this geographic tongue sticking out into the Saint-Laurent river.

Since 2010, the Rencontres has aspired to be a meeting place for Canadian and international photographers. The festival has welcomed many big names, including Edward Burtynsky, Larry Towel, Vanessa Winship and the Tendance Floue collective.

This year, the Canadian contingent includes Arctic portraits by Donald Weber, installations using old techniques by Maryse Goudreau, and Michael Flomen’s photograms. Coming from across the Atlantic is Léo Delafontaine and his incredible Micronations, the textured images of Welsh artist Helen Sear and the duo Rozenn Quéré and Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh with their Vies possibles et imaginaires, which relies on family archives.

In order to maintain this, “bridge across the Atlantic,” festival director Claude Goulet has joined forces with Les Promenades de Vendôme in order to help promote the work of local and non-local artists. For example, photographers from France and Quebec can apply for artists’ residencies in Vendée and Gaspé.
