Vagrants. Travelers. Wanderers. These words have long exerted an influence on literature and the arts. The photographer Kitra Cahana decided to follow marginalized young men and women in America who have chosen to follow their own paths towards the unknown, either alone or in communities. “I was looking for a subject that would be close to my heart. I wanted to find young people who shared my values, who had a counter-cultural and creative side to them.”
Her series Noman, on display at Matapédia, alternates between reportage and portraits taken in a mobile studio. The series received the 2009 World Press Photo award.
Cahana is based in Montreal and is a regular contributor to National Geographic.
