Two young photographers, Evgenia Arbugaeva and Rina Vukobratovic, Russian and Serbian, respectively, offer viewers an ode to childhood. Between poetry and memories, Arbugaeva takes us to the heart of Siberia, while Vukobratovic transports us to a symbolic world of haikus.
Tiksi is located on the banks of the Russian arctic. Not far from the North Pole, this small city only sees sun for a few months per year. The only light in the sky is provided by the Northern Lights. Arbugaeva grew up here. Eighteen years later, she decided to return to her hometown and document the changing of the seasons. Her photographs, sometimes pure white, take the viewer back to her earliest memories through the figure of Tania, a teenager Arbugaeva followed for the project. Despite the polar subject, this series is filled with warmth, transforming the usual image of this region into a children’s story. Arbugaeva splits her time between New York and Russia.
The second series, The Girl who Sees the Verses, is based on Rina Vukobratovic’s childhood writings, which resemble the short Japanese poetry form of haiku. Her sculptural installations evoke the emotions and innocence of youth.
The series has been exhibited across the world at different festivals.
