GalleryX presents Andrew Prokos: New Abstraction, a comprehensive exhibition in two parts presenting large-scale architectural abstractions from the photographer’s series Metropolis Abstracted and Inverted.
Metropolis Abstracted incorporates elements of contemporary architecture such as close-up views of facades, building details and reflections of architecture on glass. Through the process of abstraction Prokos delves deeper into the possibilities of the medium, exploring its confines and boundaries, in order to present a body of work that is a step into inner expression. The result is a captivating combination of lines and colours, of movement and light, that is difficult to classify within existing photographic genres. At once abstract and intimate, but also created from the existing and observable elements surrounding us, Prokos’s series emerges as contemporary experimental art that combines genres, techniques, and technological possibilities into singular pieces showing a unique voice and personal sentiment.
Inverted presents the futuristic towers and sweeping urban views of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah along with more intimate renditions of lesser-known Modernist buildings and landscapes from Liwa and Al Ain. Presented as large-scale photographs up to two meters in height, the series utilizes flat color fields, abstracted details, and close-up views to startling effect. The images are rendered in a bold color palette achieved through their depiction in the negative color space. The close-ups of facades offer a humanizing glimpse of the lives of the inhabitants. They are occupied spaces…rows of balconies containing personal effects, hanging laundry, exercise bicycles, carpets, baby strollers. Seen in the negative color space, these mundane items take on a surreal hue and become enigmatic and enticing objects to behold.
