Until January 31, 2021, the Galerie Rabouan Moussion presents the latest work of Erwin Olaf.
In April Fool, his latest series, Olaf stages himself as a spectral character, wandering like an automaton in deserted urban settings or devastated supermarket shelves, chilling and almost apocalyptic scenes that refer to the visions we were confronted with during these months, transformed today into a common aesthetic experience.
“The visual storytelling of April Fool 2020 [April Fools] gives shape to the emotions and images that paralyzed me when we suddenly woke up to the surreal nightmare of this pandemic. Fear and helplessness dominate me. for a few weeks now; I feel like a mere extra in a horror film, the conclusion of which is totally unpredictable. The plane we are on board has lost its engines – the purring silence is only the foreshadowing of what is coming. The supermarket shelves, emptied by feverish accumulators, make me realize that for decades I have believed that everything would still be there, that we would continue to dance around the volcano. Nothing is less true, and me here, standing, my mouth full of teeth. I wander idle, waiting for who knows what, dreading an enemy that I cannot see, and that fortunately I have not yet felt. house of cards collapses. ”
