Preview

Galerie Mark Hachem is teaming up with Galerie Joseph to present an exceptional retrospective of the famous photographer Gunter Sachs on the occasion of Photo Week in Paris. This exhibition outside the walls will be held 116 rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris, from November 9 to 17, 2023.

Gunter Sachs (November 14, 1932 – May 7, 2011), also known as Gunter Sachs von Opel, was a photographer, author, industrialist and head of an institute specializing in astrology research. His career began in the world of sport before achieving international fame as a documentary director, photographer and third husband of Brigitte Bardot.

Of German origin, Gunter Sachs was born in southern Germany. His family had strong ties to the world of the automobile industry, his father being the owner of Fichtel & Sachs, a major ball bearing manufacturing company, and his mother being the daughter of Wilhelm von Opel, co-founder of the car manufacturer Opel. Beyond his role as an industrialist, Gunter Sachs was a passionate art collector. His collection included works by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein and many others, demonstrating his passion for contemporary art.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Gunter Sachs lived in Paris for almost 20 years, part of that time in the company of Brigitte Bardot. It was during this period that he developed his passion and love for contemporary art, forging close links with some young emerging artists such as Arman, Cesar, Yves Klein and, above all, Salvador Dali, with whom he regularly shared memorable dinners at the restaurant La Coupole and the hotel Meurice.

However, Gunter Sachs also left a significant mark as a photographer. From 1972 he devoted himself professionally to photography, gaining international recognition with his surrealist nudes and landscapes. His works have been published in seven picture volumes and have received wide acclaim. The retrospective exhibition will present a wide range of Gunter Sachs’ iconic and previously unpublished works as a photographer. The focus will be on his striking photographs of nudes and surreal landscapes, illustrating his unique artistic vision and undeniable talent.

The exhibition, curated by Mark Hachem, will offer visitors the rare opportunity to explore the fascinating world of Gunter Sachs, through his captivating artistic eye and timeless creations. We cordially invite you to the Gunter Sachs retrospective, an opportunity to discover and appreciate the work of an exceptional photographer whose legacy continues to this day.
