First exhibition of Guénaëlle de Carbonnières at the Galerie Binome, Les marées de pierre brings together several recent photographic sets crossed by a poetics of archeology. If the artist reactivates the images of the vestiges of our humanity and unearths the archives of a common imaginary heritage, she also reinvests by means of photography gestures and above-archaeological processes: survey, excavation, prospecting, reconstitution, sampling, stratigraphy, burial, emergence… Without anachronism, it is a question of probing in depth the plastic potentialities of the medium by freely intermingling digital technologies and analogical processes of the first ages of photography. The artistic research of Guénaëlle de Carbonnières thus stems from an archeology of photography itself.
The material properties of film come to seal his free reconstructions – the artist speaks of “whims” – of historical sites from heterogeneous sources, sales catalogs, media image banks, archive funds. It is then a complex photographic ecosystem that is revealed through the manipulation of images transmuted by a succession of operations and reactions specific to the medium: overprinting, overexposure, modulation of sharpness, “chemicalography”, burn or veil of light , solarization effect, reversibility of values… By exploring the technique of the photogram – or “photogenic drawing” according to Talbot – singularly for each new series -, Guénaëlle de Carbonnières goes back to the origins of photography.
